The Utö Atmospheric and Marine Research Station of Finnish Meteorological Institute is located on Utö Island (59º 46'50N, 21º 22'23E) at the outer edge of the Finnish Archipelago Sea in the Baltic Sea. Utö is the southernmost permanently inhabited island in the Finnish archipelago. Its land area is approximately 0.8 km2 and the average permanent population between 20 and 30 people The Finnish Meteorological Institute started meteorological observations on the island in 1881, marine observations in 1900 and atmospheric trace gas and aerosol measurements in 1980.
In addition to ACTRIS, Utö Atmospheric and Marine Research Station is part of the HELCOM marine monitoring network, European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme EMEP, Integrated Carbon Observing System ICOS, and Coastal research infrastructure network Jerico-RI.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute started meteorological observations at Utö in 1881 and a fixed oceanographic station has been in operation since 1900. Atmospheric trace gas and aerosol measurements were started on the island in 1980 in the framework of European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP) In 2012, the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) and Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) started the construction of a marine research station on the island, leading to a combined Utö Atmospheric and Marine Research Station (Finnish Meteorological Institute, 2017).
The location is ideal for environmental research combining atmospheric and marine observations. The close-by shipping lanes provide a unique opportunity to study ship emissions of even individual ships.
