The area of the foothills of the Ore Mountains where the Lom site is located has specific geographical and dispersion conditions. There are large sources of air pollution and more are foreseen. The measurement was launched in 2017 as part of transboundary cooperation in the OdCom project – „Objectification of odor complaints in the Erzgebirgskreis and in the Ústí nad Labem Region - contribution to the analysis of causes and identification of health consequences“. The site is operated by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) and in its immediate vicinity there is a sampling container of the National Air Quality Monitoring Network , where a wide range of other pollutants is measured.
The history of open-pit mining and brown coal combustion in this area is half a century long and this activity will continue for at least another decade. In the past, there were episodes of deteriorated air quality, when air pollution sources had to be regulated ad hoc. The site (265 mASL) represents exposure for at least 800k people in certain air quality living in densely inhabited area. According to EOI 97/101, Lom is classified as a background rural station affected by local heating from adjacent villages, from a nearby quarry, refinery and power plant. Since 2017, the site is providing data of aerosol number size distribution and aerosol light absorption properties. In 2024, the range of measured variables was extended within ACTRIS to include the measurement of particle number concentration.
